SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR

11. Natural logarithms, and the powers of e using your calculator

Natural logarithms such as they can be calculated using any calculatorusing this key. The second function of this key ( ) permits the calculation of power for . A rough estimate for the key itself is calculated using the key sequence ( ).

Remember that is the same thing as ln. Certain calculators use the key over .

20. Calculating natural logarithms and the powers of E

Calculator modes

General methods

The calculator can be used in many different modes:

  • COMP, which is utilized for general calculations.
  • STAT is a program used to calculate statistical data.
  • TABLE, which is used for generating tables of numbers.

COMP is the abbreviation for 'computation COMP' and STAT' is the abbreviation for'statistics'..

Comp mode is set by the use of the keyboard sequence (COMP).

Mathematics and mathematics modes

There are two different ways of displaying math input into and displayed on the calculator:

  • Math mode, where fractions are entered and displayed in their mathematical form - for example, - and some irrational numbers appear as surds (such as ) or multiples of (such as ).Math mode can be chosen by following the sequence of keys (SETUP) (MthIO).
  • Linear mode, in which fractions such as are entered and displayed using a linear notation - for example, 2 3 - and all irrational numbers (such as and ) are displayed as decimal approximations.Linear mode is selected by using the key sequence (SETUP) (LineIO).

In simple terms, an irrational number is one that is unable to be expressed in a simple fraction.

You will know you're in Math mode when the word Math is displayed near the right-hand display at the top calculator display. If this is not shown then you're in Linear mode.

In Math mode you can set an answer to be displayed as a decimal using your keyboard, or toggle between decimal and mathematical outputs by using .

Fraction display modes

One can configure the calculator so that numbers that are top-heavy fractions (such as ) are always shown in mixed number format (such as ).

  • To configure the calculator to display as mixed numbers, use the key sequence (SETUP) (ab/c).
  • To set the calculator to display as top heavy fractions, make use of this key sequence (SETUP) (d/c).

Decimal display modes

The calculator can be set to display decimal numbers in various different ways:

  • Normal 1 (Norm 1) mode employs scientific notation for any number that is less than 0.01 but higher than -0.01 in other cases, and also provides answers to whatever decimal spaces they contain up to the maximum that can fit on the display. The mode is controlled by (SETUP) (Norm) .
  • Normal 2 (Norm 2) mode employs scientific notation of any number that is less than 0.000000001 but over -0.000000001 but it still displays the answers in whatever decimal points they have, subject to the maximum that will fit on the display. This mode can be entered by using (SETUP) (Norm) .
  • It is a mode that displays scientific notation (Sci) displays all decimal numbers in scientific notation with an arbitrary number of relevant figures. This mode is entered using (SETUP) (Sci) followed by the quantity of significant figures required to be displayed, such as . If you are using your calculator is set in this mode the display indicator SCI will be displayed.
  • Fixed decimal point mode (Fix) displays all decimal numbers in the given amount of decimal spaces (unless it is needed to match the result to the screen). This mode can be set using (SETUP) (Fix) followed by the decimal number needed, such as . If you are using your calculator is set in this mode, you will see the indicator on your display. FIX is shown.

12.1 Display indicators

These are symbols shown across the calculator display to show its current status of operation.

Symbol on display Meaning
The key has been held.
It appears that the key has been hit.
M A value is stored in the memory called 'M'.
STO The key for STORE ( (STO)) was press.
RCL The RECAL ( ) key has been activated.
The calculator is calibrated to measure angles in degrees.
The calculator is configured to measure angles measured in Radians.
The calculator is set to measure angles in gradians.
FIX The calculator is set to show responses to a specified number of decimal places.
SCI The calculator is set to show results in scientific notation. a fixed number of significant figures.
Math This calculator should use Math mode to the input as well as display.
STAT The calculator is in statistical mode.
There's more information to be found than can be displayed, and can be accessed by pressing the up/down keys.
The displayed line is longer than the space available on the display. Other sections of the line can be displayed using scrolling using the left/right cursor keys: And .

12.2 Common operations

To Key sequence

Make use of the results of this calculation...
... e.g. to find 42 minus the previous result.
Store a value in memory with the letter 'M' (STO) (M)
Clear a value that was stored in the memory of M (STO) (M)
Input a value in the memory 'M'
Subtract the value of in memory 'M' (M-)
Display the value stored in the 'M' memory (M)
Utilize the value of the memory with the letter 'M' for the course of calculating...
... e.g. to find 42 minus the memory with the letter 'M'. (M)
The angles that are to measure in degrees (SETUP) (Deg)
Set angles to be measured in radians (SETUP) (Rad)
Set the answers to be displayed in 3 decimal places (To choose a different number of decimal points, replace with the appropriate number) (SETUP) (Fix)
Set answers to be presented in scientific notation using three significant figures (To select a different amount of important figures replace this number) (SETUP) (Sci)
Removing any setting for rounding the display (SETUP) (Norm)

The A B, C D and X Y memories function similarly to memories in the M memory with the exception that these have no subtracting or adding from' functions.
